mechanical
According to statistics from the Center for Labor Market Forecast and Information in Ho Chi Minh City, from 2022 to 2026, Mechanical Engineering remains one of the four key industries in the city, with a demand for approximately 15,200–17,400 workers annually. Among them, about 75.35% require trained personnel.
Priority areas for development include: mold engineering, electrical machinery and equipment, machinery for agricultural, forestry, and fishery production, tools for household production, machine tools, power machinery, medical devices, optics, and clocks.
In the southern region, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy in Engineering are two of the largest schools offering mechanical engineering programs, enrolling about 1,000-1,200 students annually. In the past two years, the entrance score for this field at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry has ranged from 22-24 points; at Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy in Engineering, it has been between 23-26.25 points.
Definition
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Đức Nam, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, stated that mechanical engineering is the field that applies physical, engineering, and scientific principles to the design, maintenance, manufacturing, and automation of machines and production lines in industrial systems.
At both Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy in Engineering and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, the mechanical engineering program is divided into smaller subfields: Mechanical Engineering Technology, Machine Manufacturing Technology, and Mechatronics Technology.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy in Engineering, some related subfields include: Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Engineering, and Wood and Furniture Engineering.
Curriculum
During the four years at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, students are equipped with in-depth knowledge and skills in areas such as calculation, design, setting up manufacturing processes, and improving mechanical products; the ability to operate, assemble, maintain mechanical equipment, and solve issues related to machinery and equipment in production processes.
Core subjects include: Theoretical Mechanics, Material Strength, Mechanical Design, Machine Details, Machine Manufacturing Technology, CAD/CAM/CNC, CNC Machining Technology, Computer-Aided Mechanical Design, Smart Factory 4.0, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Testing, and Optimization.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy in Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trương Nguyễn Luân Vũ, Deputy Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, explained that students are taught specialized knowledge about materials, tolerances, product design technology, reverse design, mold design, and CAD/CAM/CNC machining programming technology.
Both universities offer internships and practical training at businesses and manufacturing plants to help students gain real-world experience in the industry.
